John P. Hughes led the development of CSC, or Cloud Scientific Computation, initially successful proven by Rhythm & Hughes Studios’ animation and visual effective projects till 2013. In 2014, as a platform technology. John Hughes Institutes (JHI) pushed the boundary of its applications to cover more general-purpose scientific applications to all sophisticated and high-precision scientific computations, simulations, emulations, animations and massive modeling. It will be a standardized cloud-based platform of services beyond production of visual effects and animation.  
The foundation of CSC has already been established via the implementation of the first pilot-phase of the project called CSC-A, which is based in Chunhwa Telecom’s Taipei datacenter, was used to successfully deliver several key components of the VFX for Ang Lee’s Academy Award wining Life of Pi (75% CG imaging of the film won the Best Visual Effect, and enabled tbe Best Director and the Best Cinematographor).
The next phases of CSC require extensive R&D to create innovative new services that can be introduced to the market, therefore our data canter partner and JHI engineers have to be actively collaborating to define the R&D and implementation roadmap.

Economic Advantages of CSC:
• 80 percent lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The combi¬nation of large scale operations, demand pooling and multi-tenancy create enormous economies in public cloud data centers: “A 100,000-server data center has an 80 percent lower TCO compared to a 1,000-server data center.”
• 40-fold cost reduction for small and medium sized businesses. “For organizations with a very small installed base of servers (<100), private clouds are prohibitively expensive compared to a pub¬lic cloud.”
• 10-fold cost reduction for larger enterprises. “For large agen¬cies with an installed base of approximately 1,000 servers, private clouds are feasible but come with a significant cost premium of about 10 times the cost of a public cloud for the same unit of service.”

Each customer will have 2 different access roles they can assign to their employees: Administrative and Technical. Within each role, employees will be assigned different access levels depending on their job specification.
The customers will interact with the queue service via a client tool or HTML5 based web interface called Q-Viz (q_viz).

Eve Service
A large Hollywood movie consists of hundreds or thousands of shots. Each shot goes through tens or hundreds of iterations and revisions and each one needs to be tracked and reviewed several times during the movie making process. The review process is carried on by many individuals ranging from the artist who creates the shot to the director who has final say in the approval process, and involving producers, coordinators, digital and visual effects supervisors. This complicated process is already unwieldy and the difficulties are compounded by the fact that these shots and individuals are scattered across multiple vendors and localities.

The Eve service is like a professional version of YouTube. Each vendor will have their own channel where they upload their daily work for review. Each shot uploaded is versioned, tracked and tagged with relevant metadata. Each channel has access restrictions allowing viewing, editing and commenting by authorized personnel.
Unlike YouTube, multiple users can simultaneously watch a synchronized edit list. The add comments, make drawings and point out areas on concern to each other. It is a collaborative review system hosted in the cloud.
As is the case with the Queue Service, customers will have 2 different access roles: Administrative and Technical.

WaaS – Workstation as a Service
A large part of implementing the “studio in the cloud” vision is to offer the ability to provide artist workstations in the cloud. Most cloud offerings of VDI provide low end remote desktop capabilities without dedicated GPU capabilities.
The aim of this service is to provide high end workstations with GPU’s in the cloud that could be provisioned based on client needs. The only hardware that the client would need in order to use this workstation would be a display device like a LCD monitor, TV and with peripherals like a keyboard, mouse and a network connection to the data center with sufficient bandwidth.
Eventually we believe the WaaS service can be extended to mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. This would be particularly useful to directors & VFX Supervisors who often need to be able to work from various onset locations while shooting around the world and the proliferation of higher bandwidth (LTE and beyond) to more regions across the world, the ability to deliver workstation capabilities to more and more areas is eventual.

    Using a hardware solution from Teradici it will allow us to support both Windows, Linux and Mac platforms and offer workstation class performance since all the heavy lifting is being done by the ASIC

    By delivering a true virtualized workstation the client only need a very basic zero client to access his workstation in the cloud, this zero client could be devices like an iPad or a smartphone or a more dedicated zero client device from leading manufacturers
  5. No Transferring of Assets
    By using a workstation in the cloud the need to transfer assets to and from the client location is completely negated
  6. Security of Data & Imagery
    Given that only display pixel are being streamed from the cloud to the zero client it provides a very secure environment often required by producers. No production data or assets ever leave the data center. Also all communication between the zero client and host is encrypted.

• Establish Taiwan as the leading provider of compute services for Hollywood and the global digital content creation industry
• Build an Ecosystem of content creation, production and education all using CSC as its platform
• Become the industry standard for cloud based digital production
• Create an Animation & VFX Market Place that would serve as a B2B portal to enable production companies, freelance artists, studios and other customers looking for a way to hire or look for VFX services to find talent. The advantage of this portal is that they could use CSC for all their production work
